What price to charge?

One of the most difficult things about being a professional photographer is knowing what to charge for jobs, and getting it!

Great piece here by a great architectural photographer about pricing.

It's ironic that you have articles giving free tips ( built on years of your work, time and expense) to others on how to take better pics and what equipment you use, encouraging more people to compete with you or do it themselves. I'm not having a go at you at all as many pro photographers do this, but is it really in pro photographers interest to do this? Do other professions do the same? Do solicitors write articles telling people how to write a proper will etc?

My philosophy is "give and you shall receive" ;-)

But also, let's be realistic about what "being a photographer" means. It's not about owning a camera, or reading a book of techniques (or an article on my blog), or paying for a model, etc.

Actually, it's 80% about running a business (just like any other) and 20% about having an "eye" - which is the one thing you can't get from a book or a blog.

Plus, if my articles help (in some tiny way) a person become a "professional photographer" then hooray! I'm not worried about one more competitor - I'm more concerned with the millions I already have!
